Leather comes in different grades — each with its own look, feel, and strength.
Knowing the difference helps you appreciate what makes your product special.
Three Main Categories
1. Full-Grain Leather:

The highest grade, left completely natural with all its original marks. It’s very strong and develops a rich patina, but can also show more imperfections.
2. Top-Grain Leather:

Made from the upper layer of the hide — the strongest part — but slightly sanded and smoothed to give a cleaner, more uniform surface.
It keeps much of the strength and character of full-grain leather while offering a refined, elegant appearance.
This is the leather we use at Al-Ghar.
3. Genuine Leather:

Made from the lower layers of the hide after the top has been split away. It’s real leather, but more processed, less durable, and doesn’t age as well.
The previous section explained which part of the hide the leather comes from. In the next section, we’ll discuss the treatment processes and the differences between the two main types of leather we use.
1. vegetable-tanned Vachetta Leather

Tanned Vachetta Leather is a premium, vegetable-tanned top-grain cowhide with a natural finish.
Natural Beauty: No heavy coatings — the surface remains pure and breathable.
Elegant Aging: The more you use it, the richer and deeper the tone becomes.
Soft & Smooth Feel: Gentle in the hand with a natural warmth.
Timeless Appeal: Used in fine leather goods for its sophisticated look.
2. Crazy Horse Leather

Crazy Horse Leather is also top-grain cowhide, but it’s finished with natural waxes and oils that give it a slightly glossy, rugged look.
When the leather bends or scratches, the color lightens in those areas — creating a vintage “pull-up” effect that adds depth and character.
Tough & Durable: Built for everyday use with a sturdy structure.
Water-Resistant Finish: The waxed surface helps repel moisture and stains.
Aged Look from Day One: Each piece has a unique, weathered character.
Easy to Maintain: Small scuffs can be rubbed or blended by hand.
